As I mentioned in the last post, we’re currently traveling around South East Asia, and I’ve been looking for crafty experiences wherever I can find them. While in Bali, I was introduced to Studio Perak, a family run jewelry shop, in the artistic community of Ubud. In addition to selling bohemian inspired silver jewelry, they also offer half day silversmithing classes, where you can create you’re very own piece. Read More…

(Sorry about the lack of posts this week. We’ve been transitioning from Thailand to Indonesian, so our time online has been a little limited.)
For the last 9 months we’ve been traveling around South East Asia. It’s been an amazing experience, but unfortunately our nomadic lifestyle doesn’t really lend it self to well to crafting. I mean it’s not exactly practical to lug around a sewing machine in my backpack just so I can get my craft fix.
As a result I’ve been searching for a new craft hobby, something that’s not too hard to learn and that’s not too material intensive. I settled on Amigurumi. I found some really great tutorials online, and figured that yarn was probably one of the easier craft materials to find in Asia. Last week we were in Bangkok for a few days before catching our flight to Bali, and I made it my mission to get set up with some supplies.

Martina turned me on to this cute little video of hand carving a stamp, so I thought I’d put together a post with some links and tips on carving your own. There are lots of great resources out there, but here just a few of my favs.

Got any illustrations, designs or doodles you’re not sure what to do with? Why not turn them into your very own custom made fabric? Currently in beta, Spoonflower.com will take your design and print it on quality, quilting-weight, 100% cotton fabric.
You do need to be somewhat computer-literate, but if you need help preparing your graphics files, there’s a comprehensive FAQ, and a video tutorial explaining things in detail.
It is a little pricey at $18/yard, but it’s not outrageous, and hey it’s custom, plus there is no minimum order so you can order as much or as little as you like.
Be sure to check their blog each week and vote for the fabric-of-the-week. The winner gets 5 free yards of their fabric printed.
